3A REGIONAL(GSL/CBL) TRACK & FIELD-COACHES INSTRUCTIONS

1. Lane assignments will be made from the results of the two District track meets(8 entries for the CBL and 4 for the GSL for individual events and 4 relay teams from the CBL and 2 relay teams from the GSL). Seeding into running events will be by order of finish at the district meets and according to formula below. Relays teams of 4 to 6 members should be the same from district meets(Meet directors for these meets should give the full list of members to John Crawford when these results are sent from district meets)-

Seeding into the finals will use the following formulas-The top 3 finishers in each heat would qualify for the finals along with the two fastest remaining times.

Only spiked type starting blocks may be used. Richland HS will provide blocks for athletes needing blocks. Schools will provide their own batons which will be inspected by the starter prior to each relay event.

2. Flighting for the field events will be done using the distances and heights from district meet results. Flights of six will be made from the 12 competitors(8 from the CBL and 4 from the GSL) for each event. Each member of a group will be allowed one try in turn until all three preliminary tries have been completed before the next group begins competition. Ten(10) minutes of warmup will be allowed between each flight and between preliminaries and finals. The top eight competitors in each event will be taken into the finals of each event where each will be allowed three additional tries. Finals for each of these field events will be the same day as the preliminaries.

3. Coaches must remind their athletes to remain in the stands except when competing. Coaches are not permitted on the field once the meet begins. The rules permit coaches to make their protest and direct their questions to the meet director, Mike Edwards(Richland HS) Video tapeing is allowed but can NOT be used in a coaching matter by either coaches or parents.

4. A Games Committee of 5 knowledgeable track persons representing both the GSL and CBL shall be appointed by the meet manager, to assist the manager as needed, and to arbitrate and resolve all disputes. TRACK COACHES PLEASE NOTE: A DECISION BY THE GAMES COMMITTEE IS FINAL, AND WILL NOT BE CHANGED BY SUBSEQUENT APPEAL TO THE WIAA UNLESS IT CAN BE SHOWN THAT SUCH A DECISION IS IN VIOLATION OF WIAA OR NATIONAL FEDERATION RULES.

5. Contestants will have one(1) minute to complete a trial(1 1/2 minutes in the pole vault) once their name has been called by a judge. As per rule 7-2-7, competitors have 10 minutes from the time they are excused, before they must have themselves available for their next trial.

6. Teams and/or individuals must report prior to running events to the marshalling area where the clerk of the course is located. The marshalling area is in the tent located in the infield.

7. Eight places will be awarded in the regional meet. Scoring will be 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. Awards will be made to individuals or relay teams as soon as official results for each event are determined. Athletes need to report to the infield for awards as announced Medals will be awarded to all State Qualifiers in each event. Ribbons will be awarded to each subsequent finisher in each event. A trophy of not exceeding $50 in value will be given to each 1st place boys and girls team. All awards will be made on Saturday. Official results will be available at the end of each session in the computer area located in shed just off of the finish line.

8. Contestants must wear only school issued jersey and shorts(School issued body suits maybe worn in place of jersey and shorts). It is restricted to a single color minus any trim or lettering of a second color. No other apparel will be permitted. As per directive from the WIAA, shorts are NOT required over body suits if body suits are worn. If any member of a relay team wears a body suit, all members of that relay team wearing body suits shall wear body suits of the same single color if worned by more than one. The Games Committee will rule on any questionable items. Quarter-inch pyramid spikes must be worn on the track, if spikes are worn. T-shirts will also be for sale at the concession stand.

9. In the pole vault and high jump, the rotating flight system of 5 jumpers will be in effect. Starting heights for the pole vault and high jump will be adjusted based upon district results(Starting height will be one increment height below the height obtained by the lowest finisher). Increments will be 6 inches in the pole vault and 2 inches in the high jump until half or less of the jumpers are left. At that point the increments will be 3 inches in the pole vault and 1 inch in the high jump. Shots, javelins and discus will be weighed and measured in the utility shed at the finish line area each day. Schools will need to furnish their own equipment. No school or privately-owned instruments may be brought on the field. Weighin times on Friday will be between 2:00 and 3:00 for Friday events only and on Saturday will be between 9:00 and 10:00 for Saturday events only. The Computerized Accutrack timing system from Pasco SD will be in use during the meet and will be the official times for athletes going from Regionals to State. Only qualifying state standards listed below can be made during the finals.

10. In case a qualified contestant cannot make the trip to Richland, it is the responsibility of the principal of the school of the indisposed contestant to notify John Crawford at 509-539-0678, who in turn will notify the principal of the next qualified contestant. The replaced participant will not be allowed to participate in the regional meet in any event. There are to be no substitutions after the official start of the meet on Friday(3:00).

11. Coaches should be aware of Rule 5, Section 9, Article 2 on page 34. In relay events, no more than 6 individuals may be listed as entries, any FOUR are eligible for each race starting with the Regionals and ending with the State Finals. These entries must be on file with John Crawford prior to the meet on Friday. This counts as an event for those that run. Coaches should also be familiar with the State Meet Regulations. Coaches will meet at 2:00 in the infield with meet managers, Mike Edwards and John Crawford.

12. Trainers will be on site. Medical assistance will be near the finish line. Water will be available on site. Warmups will be allowed in the infield only.

13. Results of the district meet, seedings for the regionals and results of the regionals will be posted on the internet at John Crawford's website: www.jcrawford.net Ribbons sent to each school are to be used by your coaches, managers, trainers, bus drivers and supervisors. Athletes must wear these numbers to pass thru the gates or to enter the infield for competition. Runner numbers are to be worn on the back except for jumper who may wear the number in the front. Supervisors/coaches must have their ribbons visible to enter the computer area for results or to pass thru the entrance gate.
