2011 Pasco Invite-Golden Celebration
Invite Logo
The Pasco Invite was started in 1962 by Coach Ron Wells drawing 8 boys teams allowing for each team to have two entries per event.  The meet was run on the cinder track at Edgar Brown Stadium that saw it’s first competition with football in 1957 and track in 1958.  The track was unique in that it had a 220 straightaway and was more doughnut shape as it ran behind the stands on the backside of the track.  It was fun to watch the 880 relay with the exchange behind the stands.  We ran the 220 yd Dash and 180 Low Hurdles on the straight track.  For the first 15 years, we ran on this track with English distances(yards verses meters).  In 1977 we restructured the stadium to have a all-weather black rubberized metric track.  In the 80’s this was changed to an Atlas track and later upgraded to an Atlas 5000 track in 2002 when we put Field Turf on the stadium floor.
In celebrating the Golden Anniversary of the Pasco Invite, we have designated seven events as “Golden Events”.   These seven events have been at the Invite for ALL 50 years and represent the different aspects of the events that makeup a track meet(sprints, distance races, hurdle races, relays, throwing events, vertical jumps and horizontal jumps).  Many events started first at the Invite before they became state events.  Examples of this included:  440 Relay started at the Invite in 1968 and did not become a state event until 1974,  Two Mile started at the Invite in 1964 and was a state event in 1965, Triple Jump started in 1968 and was a state event in 1970, and the Intermediate Hurdles started in 1968 and was not a state event until 1980.  We were one of the first schools to go “metric”.  The state meet did not go “metric” until partially in 1980 and full in 1981.
Other than the obvious change from English to Metric, some events have evolved into other events or have gone away.  Even though we went metric in 1977, we kept running the Mile and Two Mile until 1988 when we switched to the 1600 and 3200.  Even though we introduced the 300 Intermediate Hurdles in 1968, we kept running the 180 yd Low Hurdles until 1980.  Politically the broad jump name was changed in 1968 to the long jump.  This also came about as the result of another horizontal jump(Triple Jump) being introduced.  We introduced and ran a Medley Relay(440, 440, 880, Mile) in 1968 that we continued to run until 1996 when it evolved into a distance relay(1200, 400, 800, 1600).  In the earlier years(1963-1977) we ran a Fatman’s relay(440) where the runners were weighed on scales on the award’s trailer.  Because of time constraints, this event went away in 1978 with the introduction of girls events at the Invite.  From day 1 of the Invite, the boys have ran a 880 relay that they continued to run until 1983.  The girls continued to run the 800 relay until 2007.  In 1978, the Girls events started at the Pasco Invite with a 80 yd Low Hurdles that we ran for two years before that event became the 100 meter Low Hurdles.  The Girls Two Mile started in 1981, Girls Triple Jump was started in 1982, Girls Pole Vault in 1999 and Distance Medley in 1996.
Some notes about the meet.  In the first year of the Invite, Pasco had two individual winners, Gary VanDinter in the mile and Doyle Clapper in the pole vault.  Eisenhower won the first meet and five out of the first six meets when the Invite had only eight teams(5 individuals scored).  From 1968 thru 1973, five places scored with 16 teams.  From 1974 thru 1976, there were 25 teams and the top 6 individuals scored.  Starting with the 1977 meet, the number of teams/individuals grew and the number of places was still 6 until 1993 when the meet was expanded to eight places. Rick Riley’s Two Mile in 1966 was a national best at the time.  Ron Howard of Pasco was the first triple jump winner at the Pasco Invite and later the first triple jump winner at State.  In 1983 we started electronic timing using the older Poloroid Accutrack system from Yakima and Sports Festival.   In 2000 we bought and started using a MacFinish Timing System and added a second system in 2004.   This was especially helpful after we were offering double the pleasure with simultaneous events to occur with the sprints on one side of the track and hurdles on the other side in the preliminaries.
